Try, try again.
Got up early as usual, but started reading blogs before I even went downstairs for coffee. Now that's just wrong.
Lucinda and the son-in-law are coming over for dinner and Scrabble again tonight. The kids are just smarter than we are. It's sad, but what can I say? So I'm plotting a new strategy.
Last time I thought that beer would do it. I fixed a pretty nice meal of leg of lamb, baked potatoes, salad, cooked carrots, and corn bread, but didn't have a dessert. I thought if I just kept the beer flowing, they'd be, well, you know, less smart maybe.
They were still too smart for us. Those guys. Lucinda is a true linguist and the son-in-law has a great memory, has memorized all the two and three letter words in the Scrabble dictionary, and is great at strategy. Whatadaya going to do? Lose is the way we always handle it.
When Aral PPP took us to Boston recently we ate at an Italian restaurant were Niks and I both had Spaghetti Carbonara. Boy, it was good.
Lucinda and the SIL are both skinny runners. Those type people love carbs. I figure they'll eat up big time if I make the Spaghetti Carbonara. So I downloaded a recipe for it.
I just got back from shopping for the ingredients. Calls for something called prosciutto, pronounced pro-shoot-o. I'm not so sure I'm spelling it correctly. Also parmigiano-reggiano cheese. Never heard of it before. I'll have to grate it--always hurt my fingers. I had a hard time finding this stuff. I was in the store about half the day, asking employees "Where's the parmigiano-reggiano cheese" Getting answers like, "They keep the weird stuff over by the deli."
So, along with the spaghetti dish, we'll have garlic bread, a green salad, a fruit salad, a dessert (egg custard pie), and of course beer, beer, and more beer. Dazzle them with mind-dulling food AND the beer.
Of course, we don't have a chance. But wish us luck anyway.

sounds delicious!
Sure you've heard of parmigiano. That's just fancy for parmesan.
(Is it legal to spell adze without the e?)
I LOVE that expensive fancy Italian ham! It is soooo yummy. But at $10/pound it BETTER be good.
And I still say you should spike the beer.
And we have to eat Alpo
Turkey makes people sleepy. You could add turkey ONLY to their food and then load on the wine and beer. I don't think you have a chance at winning, but I will be pulling for you anyway.
If spiking the beer works, please let me know.
Gee, I don't know HOW to spike beer. And this is my lovely daughter we're talkin' about...and her very nice husband. But then, I do need an advantage here....
Lucinda,
Yeah, the-son-in-law always wins, but you always come in a close second. Yes, you are skinny. Just face it honey. Also you are "refined" as dddragon says, and a linguist as I said.
This talk of beer is really obnoxious. Far better to drink milk.
Sounds like an absolutely great meal...
And look how talented that dddragon is! She invented this wonder, Astro in Pezland. I love it.
No, jevanking, I did not know what prosciutto was, nor parmigiano reggiano cheese. But I was able to find them at the deli store. The meal really did turn out very well.
It's 12:16 AM now. The son-in-law won, don't know who took second or third. I was dead last. But of course, I'm not bitter.
glad you're not bitter. wish I'd been there. I could have helped with using the x's and q's. and thanks for vising my blog, mother of all pezes.
Mother of all Pezes? That's funny! I'm sorry you lost, but perhaps you were in a carb coma too? That dinner sounds delicious!
Well, speaking of beer, you all know alcohol is a poison, drug, and a depressant, right? Also, it contains no nutritional value, and is high in (empty) calories.
Anyway, the Spaghetti Carbonara does sound pretty good...except for the ham.
The Devil's Little Helper posted about you on the Devil's blog!
Carbonara IS yummy except for the ham! Goa'uld got it exactly right. But golly, are you the church lady, Goa'uld? Geez! You sound like A Little Bar of Soap when it comes to beer. ;-P
I think I'll have a Corona with dinner. MMmmmm!
Aral! Don't tease your neice! Goa'uld is just 14 after all. Play nice now.
No, I felt the same way about beer when I was 14. Probably up until I was 20 or so, actually. Goa'uld is cool, yo.
