At the movies

Radio question of the day:

Popular Internet search engines tell us that last year, this was the most misspelled word we were searching for... What is it?
****************************************

This is the time of year when husband Niks and I start trying to see all the movies that will either be nominated for the Academy Award as Best Picture, or will have an actor/actresses nominated. The nominations haven't been announced, but the Golden Globes are a decent indicator of what might be honored.

We've seen Brokeback Mountain. I figure there will be several nominations there. It's excellent and deserves recognition.

Just saw Capote. Philip Seymour Hoffman was wonderful in that. Good story as well. That Seymour. Why does he want to use all three names?

Already saw The Constant Gardener. Great movie. I recommend it. All the acting is good, and it's an intriguing story. We liked The Squid and The Whale, but it's not the least bit funny as some ads try to make it out to be. Jeff Daniels is terrific at making me hate him.

We saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Producers, and In Her Shoes. Those aren't likely to be in serious contention for Academy Awards, but they're good movies. Shirley McClain might be nominated for In Her Shoes.

The Academy will soon announce the nominations and the movies that we missed will come back to the theaters and we'll begin our race to see them. I already know that I want to see Transamerica. Felicity Huffman won a Golden Globe for that. She's one of those desperate women on TV.
***************************************

Almost Forgot to tell you what I learned today:

Since border policies were implemented in the 1990s, it is estimated that over 3,000 migrants have lost their lives on the U.S./Mexico border.
*****************************************

January 23 is the anniversary of the birth of our son. Amnesty International was a cause near and dear to his heart. (If you don't know about him, you can go to my August 7, 2005 post.)

Answer to the question of the day:

Restaurant

Pay attention kiddies. It's not that hard.

I have been reading your blog for some time, but never made it that far back in the archives. I had no idea. What a sad thing to have happen. I don't even know what to say. I am sure he is with you in your hearts, and my thoughts go out to you in this day of remembrance. You are a strong woman to have written such an account. Thoughts and prayers to you and yours.

'Restaurant', eh? I would have guessed 'fragrance' (frangrance, fragrence... we see it all on MakeupAlley) or 'lavender' or 'calendar'. You know how I feel about bad spellers. Just can't take anything they write seriously. Can't help it.

I wish I could see all those films. Will have to wait. They all sound great.

I am a problem speller, but have serious disdain for incorrect spelling, this leads to unusual language use,
such as
"We went out to a...(oh man, how do you spell that, resturant?restarant? restaurant? I can't remember!!) we went out to eat."

Many hugs and healing thoughts are sent your way on this day, your wonderful charm, wit, wisdom, and strength of character are so clear in what you post and in your comments. I hope the affection and esteem so many of us feel toward you is as easily seen.
I wish you a peaceful day, filled with properly spelled words.

I just read your posting from so many years ago this date. Tears flow; caring thoughts are sent your way.

Thanks for sharing about the movies. I plan to see a number of those when they get to DVD.

I might suggest "Crash" if you're interested in thinking about how our lives intersect with others, the impact our actions may have. I was unexpectedly and strongly moved. A friend of a colleague said, "It should be required viewing" for young adults, especially.

Ron Howard's "Cinderella Man" surprised me also (though I don't like boxing) as a striking real-life example of family strength and the ability to rebound in life. Enjoyed the special feature interview with the son/family of the real hero.

Happy Nivek birthday day!

Restaurant? really? Attendance is one that always makes me pause for some reason ~ I want to spell it as "attendence".

Happy birthaversary to Pez son and brother, Nivek.

I love that you make it a point to see all the Oscar contenders. Off the top of my head, I've seen The Constant Gardner, Syriana, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (I still think it had the most amazing special effects) and Crash. I'm not sure what others.

Just like Mike above, "definately" is the word I always spell wrong (I don't know if I've just spelled it right or not either). Which is completely different than words I type wrong - when it comes to typos, anything's fair game with me!

Thank you TLP for sharing your story about your son. You made me cry but sometimes crying is good... isn't it? When will the pain of losing a loved one end?

I am definitely a stickler for good spelling, although standardised spelling of English words is a very recent phenomenon. Usually makes it easier to criticise others, rather than easing communication. I believe that some people in the British Colonies have a tendency to redsign the graphic make up of traditional Englandish words.

On a serious note, your August 7 post moved me too. It's a horrible tragedy, but there's that adage about no one being gone as long as they're remembered. We're all remembering him, who didn't even know him, thanks to your blog. It's got to be good that you celebrate his birth.

I haven't been a constant reader of yours for very long so I too, had to look up your archive. It left me with tears running down my cheeks while I sit here at a max. security institution. I'm sorry, tlp. I'm at a loss for words.

I will be thinking about your son, TLP on January 23rd, and thank you for telling us about a cause that was so dear to him.

On the movie issue: you must see MATCH POINT. It is truly wonderful!

ALl my words are mispelled most of the time, so the word you listed (which I cannot spell correctly) comes as no surprise!

Thank you for sharing about your son. As always, I'm very sorry about your loss. I know time only mends so much.

Restaurant??? Really???

I love these radio questions. Most sound vaguely sexual, which is pretty funny when you get the actual answer.

You are a dedicated moviegoer. I am more primitive for the most part, and when I see a movie, I usually don't like to see ones that are too emotional and will wring me like a wet rag.

One of my fave unusual movies of all time is "Babette's Feast." Ever see it? You really should! I know you'd love it.

I thought misspell would be the answer. Darn.

Happy Birthday, Nivek. You've got a wonderful family.

Wow...have known you and your family for quite a while now...this somehow escaped me. I am so sorry for your loss...
Happy Birthday, Nivek.

I misspell on principle and mostly my fingers move quicker than my thoughts. One word I always have to look up is conscience. The spelling just does not make sense!

Your son will forever be surrounded by love. I hope this day isn't too painful for you, your hubby, and your daughters.

I like to see the oscar contenders too. I'm usually late in seeing them. I just recently rented Million Dollar Baby. That shows you how late I am sometimes.

I love movies! Wish you lived closer!

My dad always said I should get 100% on my spelling 'cause that was the only test where I'd have the answers ahead of time. Great logic but it didn't work!

Happy Birthday & Memories Nivek.
