Fastnacht Day in Pennsylvania

It's Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent season. In our part of Pennsylvania, the "Pennsylvania Dutch" area, that means it's Fastnacht Day.

A Fastnacht is a kind of donut. Only much better than a regular donut. You HAVE to eat at least one fastnacht on Fastnacht Day. If you don't live in fastnacht country, then go ahead and have a regular ol' donut. Sad. But all you can do is the best you can do.

I'm havin' a fastnacht right now with my coffee. MMmmmmmmm.......

Will you describe a fastnacht? Slowly. Don't rush it.

One of your kids says no sugar, no glazing. So is your fastnacht both sugared AND glazed?

Think of it also: unleavened fastnacht. (Yikes: A real loser.)

I am gonna have to harrass Lime for the recipe.

Any excuse for a donut - thanks, TLP!

I had two fastnacht already and think about the third. That we have donouts at work today is simply coincidental, but I am glad I am in tune with Pennsylvania:)

Well, Monika, Pennsylvania was settled by alot of Germans - dad's side of the family is full of 'em.

And I've had two today, and am sure to have another before I go to bed ...

The canteen ladies force fed me pancakes. I was happy with my ravioli in a tin but they made me do it.

Damnit they were good.

I had King Cake but didn't get the baby. So I don't have to provide the cake next year.

Hmmm...well, we don't have Fastnacht Day in Indiana, so I'll celebrate with a Square Donut instead. Mmmmm. Sweet, flaky glaze, sinful-donut-goodness.

"Secondhand Fat" really cracked me up!
I wanna sit in the fat section because the skinny section won't serve mashed potatoes with gravy. They will have boiled potatoes with no butter, and that just won't do.

I think fat is contagious and I caught it from someone.
