Must be summer

I know for sure that it's summer 'cause I saw a firefly last night. It's the first I've seen this year.

Didcha catch'em and put'em in a jar when you were a kid? I did. I didn't keep them a long time. Just watched them and then let them go 'cause I wanted them to live to fly around. I shouldn't have disturbed them in the first place. I was a bit of a brat. Big surprise, huh?

If you don't have fireflies where you live, you're missing something lovely and exciting. I never tire of seeing them.

Okay, I see your little Lucy Pez on so many comment boxes of some of the same blogs I read (did that make sense?) so I had to stop in and give your blog a read. YES! I DID catch fireflies when I was a kid, and this makes me miss the East coast sooooo much (I'm from Long Island). Now I live in southern california, where fireflies do not exist (if they do, I've never seen them). Sigh. Childhood was forever ago.

Yeah, I used to read D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Mythology by the light of my firefly jar.

Can you read email by firefly light?

Yes, I did catch them when I was young. It was a favorite summer night pastime. I see them every evening. I have noticed that they are not nearly as plentiful as they were in the 50's. I wonder if DDT was to blame for that?

Oh yes, I used to catch them too and put them in a jar. Like you, I turned them loose later on. They were fascinating and still are. I have not seen any this year so far. Don't see them anymore like we did as kids growing up in the country though, but we do see them occasionally here.

Nothing says childhood summers like fireflies.

Hi TNP. Haven't stopped by in a while. Florida doesnt have "lightening bugs" (that is what we called fire flies in NY). I miss them. Last summer when we went to TN on vacation, I saw them again and it was like a special treat to be able to show Anna something she didn't know existed.
When I was a kid, one of the neighbor boys used to collect them and take off their little light thingie effectively killing them. Then he used to put them on his skin. He is probably a serial killer or politician now.
